Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a ‘tummy tuck’, is performed to improve the shape of the abdomen. Patients with excess skin and fatty tissue, along with patients who have muscle diastasis (which can happen following pregnancy), are all suitable candidates for this procedure.
A tummy tuck is performed with liposuction for patients who need to remove large stores of fat. However, abdominoplasty can also help men and women who have recently lost a significant amount of weight. Excess skin is often left behind during major weight loss, often leaving patients with less confidence in their appearance than prior to losing the weight. Abdominoplasty can give them the pride they deserve after working so hard to improve their personal health.
Your initial consultation with Mr Morris Ritz will give you a chance to learn all about the procedure from start to finish. He will tell you the details of the procedure, discuss post-operative care and fill you in on any complications that may be involved with the surgery, considering your own personal health. It is always important to be aware of the risks you might face in surgery, no matter how minor.
Your medical history is also considered in your candidacy for abdominoplasty, as this is one of the more extensive plastic surgery procedures, especially for recovery. Together, you and Mr Ritz will discuss your options and weight them out before you decide whether you will opt for surgery. Once you schedule a procedure, you will have another consultation two weeks prior to work out logistics and answer any final questions you may have.
During the Surgery
You will be directed to arrive at hospital 1-2 hours before your surgery appointment. Mr Ritz will join you to draw markings on your body before the procedure. You will be anaesthetized and prepared for the operation.
During surgery, you will have an incision made across the lower abdomen. This scar used to be very unsightly, but with advances in technique, abdominoplasty now yields a more delicate scar, hidden below the bikini line. Through the incision, liposuction is performed, or fatty tissue and excess skin will be removed. Abdominal muscles will be reshaped to a flattering form and skin will be re- tightened over the incision area. Your wound will be sealed, and drainage tubes will be placed to remove any excess fluids.
Abdominal surgery is fairly major in terms of recovery, and you will be required to stay in hospital for 2-4 days. Drain tubes will be removed after approximately 48 hours. You will also be dressed in compression garments that need to be worn for the next 6 weeks. This ensures everything heals in its place and helps you manage pain associated with movement.
Post operative care
After your surgery, you will be unable to drive for 2 weeks and will also need to limit your daily activity. For those two weeks, employ the help of friends and family for household chores and daily activities that may require too much exertion. You must avoid strenuous activity and exercise for at least the 6 weeks during which you are wearing the compression garment. Following that time, Mr Ritz will assess you and you will be able to ease back into physical activity.
It is so important that you follow post-operative instructions carefully to keep yourself safe through recovery, to allow your body to fully heal and to ensure your best results.
Benefits of Abdominoplasty
Though it may have one of the longest recoveries, abdominoplasty is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, especially for major fat loss. Our patients have received the following benefits from this procedure, and more:
- Tighter, flatter tummy: In an obvious way, this procedure yields results that give patients a leaner abdominal area. You will enjoy the flat belly you have always dreamed of and say goodbye to unwanted lower abdominal fat.
- Love your body: Because the abdominal area is a “problem area” for so many, giving patients a sleeker, thinner look allows them to take pride in their bodies once again (or in many cases, for the first time). Every person deserves to love the way they look!
- Proud of your hard work: For patients who have recently lost a significant amount of weight, a tummy tuck allows them to finally see and feel the benefits of their own journey. Losing weight and continuing to carry excess skin can be troubling, and freeing patients from that final load can make all the difference.
