Brachioplasty (arm lift or arm reduction) is performed to contour and shape the arms by removing excess skin, tissue and fat. When you raise your arms laterally, you might notice excess skin or fat hanging, often referred to as ‘bat wings’. This produces an unflattering silhouette, even when arms are by your sides, and causes feelings of inadequacy for both men and women.
Even men and women who are in fairly good shape experience this excess skin, especially with age. Brachioplasty allows you to remove this unwanted skin and/or fat and sculpt leaner, more toned arms. It will give you more confidence and help to improve the contour of your natural shape.
During your initial consultation with Mr Ritz, he will discuss the procedure with you at length, ensuring you are fully aware of pre-operative instructions, the actual surgical procedure, post-operative care and recovery time. You will also discuss any risks that may affect you during surgery, in light of your own medical history and goals for surgery. Every body is different and reacts differently to surgical procedures, so it is important that you are aware of any complications that may arise, even if minor.
Mr Ritz will also conduct measurements of your arms and discuss with you how you can safely and effectively reach your desired results with brachioplasty. You will be able to ask any questions so you can make an informed decision as to whether this procedure is right for you. You will also schedule a consultation for 2 weeks prior to surgery to address any additional questions and create a plan for the procedure day.
During the surgery
Depending on the hospital where you are being treated, you should arrive about 1-2 hours before surgery so that Mr Ritz can draw necessary pre-operative markings and ensure you are prepared for the procedure. Anaesthesia will be administered to ensure your optimal comfort.
Brachioplasty involves incisions on the inside of the arm, from armpit to elbow. This scar is fairly hidden and typically thin, but is larger than those of other procedures. Once the incision is made, liposuction will be employed to remove extra fat and Mr Ritz will remove excess skin and tissue before reshaping muscles and sealing the incisions. You will have drain tubes placed to catch any excess fluid that may run following surgery.
After brachioplasty, you will be required to stay one night in hospital. You will be fitted with special sleeves that act as a compression garment, which you are required to wear for 6 weeks day and night to ensure successful healing.
For your optimal healing, it is important that you follow care instructions given by Mr Ritz very carefully. For the first two weeks, you will be unable to drive and swelling and soreness will limit you in engaging in physical activity. Be sure to contact friends and family for help and support during this time. It typically takes 6 weeks, or until compression garments are removed, for you to return to the gym and begin easing back into regular exercise.
Keep realistic expectations throughout this journey, as your long-term results are dependent on your own dedication. If you remove fat from your body, it is important to keep up with a healthy diet and exercise regiment to maintain these results. It is always possible for fat to return where it was once lost.
Benefits of Brachioplasty
If you choose brachioplasty for your aesthetic solution, you can enjoy many benefits both physically and mentally, including:
- Leaner arms: Removal of excess fat will give you arms that are thinner, more toned and more flattering for your body shape.
- Removal of irritating excess skin: As you age and your skin begins to sag more than desired, it can be both unflattering and annoying, as this skin can rub and wave on its own accord. Removal can improve the look and feel of your skin and contour to your natural shape.
- Self esteem boost: Removing excess skin and fat always gives our patients a sense of confidence, as they now have found a way to love the part of their body that once gave them shame. Everyone should love the way they look, and if your arms are causing you to second guess your natural beauty, brachioplasty may be the solution for you.
