About Calf Implants

Calf implants (calf augmentation) are used to increase fullness in the calf for patients who either have a congenital condition or who cannot achieve the result they desire by going to the gym. Though this procedure attracts primarily men, both men and women can benefit from adding volume and shape to their calves where muscles might not be dominant.

Like most other implants, these can be made from silicone-gel, depending on your personal goals for size, shape and feeling, as well as your current condition. Mr Ritz will help you, during your consultation, to decide which material is best for you.

Initial Consultation

Your initial consultation with Mr Ritz will help you both gain a better understanding of whether calf augmentation is the right procedure for your goals. You will have the chance to explain what you would like to see from your results, while Mr Ritz will be able to explain to you the full details of the surgery. You will be informed of complications that might be associated with calf implants, even if they are minor. Every surgery comes with risks, and it is necessary that you are aware of every possibility.

Mr Ritz will assess and measure your calves in order to discuss your personal options and what results might look like for you. It is important to keep expectations realistic throughout the entire process. You will also be asked about your medical history to determine if you are a candidate for surgery.

Your role in considering calf implants is to think about your current size and shape, what your realistic goals are, recovery time and consequences of increasing calf size and make your decision.

You will have a second consultation about 2 weeks prior to your procedure, to discuss the surgery again and answer any further questions you may have.

During the surgery

On your surgery day, you should arrive to the hospital about one to two hours before your procedure in order to prepare with Mr Ritz. He will draw markings on your calves for surgical guides and your anaesthetist will speak with you and deliver proper medication.

During surgery, incisions will be made in the creases behind your knees, convenient spots for placing implants and hiding scars. Mr Ritz will create a pocket for the implant, which is placed over the calf muscle. The incision will then be closed and the wound sutured and dressed. This procedure is usually performed during the day, so you will not be required to remain in the hospital overnight.

Recovery

Following your surgery, you will be released to go home with a friend or family member. You will be given compression stockings to wear for one week, until your follow-up appointment with Mr Ritz. During the follow-up, you will be able to see your healing progression and learn how you can optimize your recovery moving forward.

Post-Operative Care

Mr Ritz will give you specific recovery instructions following your procedure, and again after your follow-up appointment. Generally, you should avoid driving for at least two weeks after the surgery. Your calves are important muscles in your legs and control so much of your movement, so it is also especially important to avoid physical activity until you are fully healed. This typically takes around 6 weeks, but Mr Ritz will confirm with you when you are ready to return to moderate activity.

Benefits of Calf Implants

For men and women alike, calf implants can offer benefits that improve aspects of their mental and physical health. The following are some of the positive results our patients report after calf augmentation:

  • Improved self esteem: for those with smaller calves, especially patients involved in the fitness industry, it is difficult to have confidence in showing off their legs. Even women with undefined calves long for more shapely limbs. Calf implants offer patients a chance to love the way they look, head to toe.
  • No hindrance on calf muscles: some augmentations and surgeries have an affect on the functions surrounding them; however, calf implants do not impair the function or growth of the calf muscle. Improved self esteem often offers patients improved physical performance from that confidence, as well.
  • High patient satisfaction: This procedure has one of the highest ratings among patients and one of the lowest complication rates, so there is little risk in augmenting your calves and only positive results to come!
